  1. Smoking  is the inhaling the fumes from 
  2. burning substances, generally tobacco in the 
  3. form of cigarettes. The practice can be 
  4. habit-forming and is dangerous to health, 
  5. since carbon monoxide and other toxic
  6. materials result from the combustion process. 
  7. A direct link between lung cancer and tobacco 
  8. smoking was established 1950. The habit is 
  9. also linked to respiratory and coronary heart 
  10. diseases. In the West, smoking is now 
  11. forbidden in many public places because even 
  12. passive smoking-breathing in fumes from other 
  13. people's cigarettes-can be harmful.

  15. Smoking is also a method of preserving fresh
  16. oily meats (such as pork and goose) or fish 
  17. (such as herring and salmon). Before being
  18. smoked, the food is first salted or soaked in
  19. brine, then hung to dry.
